Course Description: Student Seminar. Topics covered vary. This course may be repeated indefinitely, but only two credits count towards the degree. Grading system: satisfactory/unsatisfactory.
Prerequisite: Students are required to be enrolled in the graduate program in mathematics.
Learning outcomes: The main purpose of MA 592 is to introduce students to the research literature in the mathematical sciences. MA 592 is also used for orientation and advising of graduate students. In addition, MA 592 also serves as an introduction into research methods and research integrity for the mathematical sciences. Upon the successful completion of the course students will
- Know to access the mathematics and statistics research literature and use indices such as MathSciNet and the ArXiv.
- Know how to search through the research literature, how to read research articles, and how to present mathematical research to their peers.
