About the IBC
The Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) of the University of South Alabama is responsible for reviewing and approving all research proposals (protocols) and teaching activities conducted by faculty, staff, students that involves the use of infectious and potentially infectious agents, human and non-human primate materials, and biological toxins.
The primary functions of the IBC include, but are not limited to:
- Recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecules
- Biological agents classified as Risk Group1,
- Risk Groups 1, 2, 3, and 4 in the NIH Guidelines
- Research involving select agents, as listed by the USDA and CDC
- Use of investigational biological products or biologics, including human gene products and therapies in human subjects.
- Conducting annual inspections of registered research laboratories
