Phi Sigma Iota
“The dictionary is based on the hypothesis -- obviously an unproven one -- that languages are made up of equivalent synonyms.” ― Jorge Luis Borges
Welcome to the Chi Omega #263 Chapter of Phi Sigma Iota
Phi Sigma Iota recognizes outstanding ability and high standards of students and faculty of foreign languages, literatures and cultures (including classics, linguistics, philology, comparative literature ESL, bilingual education, and second language acquisition). It is the highest academic honor in the field of foreign languages. Phi Sigma Iota has initiated over 50,000 members since its foundation in 1917, and it has created and supports numerous scholarship programs.
In October 2012, a chapter of the society was established at the University of south Alabama with an inaugural class of 16 students from French, German, Russian and Spanish languages. The initiation ceremony officially inducting these students into the society was held on April 19, 2013. Today the Chi Omega chapter has 40 members who take the lead in promoting foreign languages and cultures both on campus and in the larger Mobile community through activities as varied as foreign languages poetry slams, lecture series and essay contests in foreign languages for high school students.
