▼   2026 UNOLS-MATE MARINE TECHNICAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM Deadline: January 12, 2026

The University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) is pleased to announce the

2026 UNOLS-MATE MARINE TECHNICAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

APPLICATION DEADLINE: MONDAY, JANUARY 12, 2026

This is an incredible opportunity to work onboard research vessels at-sea, in the shipyard, and at shore-based facilities, and be exposed to a wide range of marine technologies, equipment and marine technical professionals. Please share this announcement with students and recent graduates you think would be interested and qualified.

Internship Description: The U.S. Academic Research Fleet of UNOLS-designated research ships will host 12-14 short-term (2-12 weeks each) marine technical internships in 2026 (pending funding approval). This is an incredible opportunity to work onboard research vessels at-sea, in the shipyard, and at shore-based facilities. The selected interns will work with marine technical professionals and be exposed to a wide range of marine technologies and equipment used in support of shipboard scientific research. Internship dates will depend on the schedule of each research cruise. Interns will be selected in the order that internships start. Applications will stay on file the entire year until all positions have been filled. The program will pay a stipend of $600 per week plus airfare, lodging and other approved travel expenses. Interns will work, eat, and sleep aboard the research vessel, and be provided lodging and a meal plan off ship as needed. Internship projects will vary from one hosting organization to another and correspond to the objectives set by each specific cruise mission. Please email Maria Osiadacz, Program Manager, maria@unols.org, with questions.

To apply, read the requirements listed below, prepare your documents and complete the online application: ONLINE APPLICATION FORM

▼   2026 Sustainable Land & Water Research Experience (SLAWR REU) Deadline: January 12, 2026

Sustainable Land and Water Resource Experience for Undergraduates (SLAWR REU)  is a community-centered and tribally focused summer program, which explores the interactions between physical, natural, and social processes through the weaving of Indigenous knowledge with Western knowledge to advance scientific understanding and support tribal management decisions.

About the program: SLAWR REU is a 10-week summer program. Students will conduct research from June 8-August 7, 2026.

With a focus on community-based participatory research and diverse interdisciplinary research teams, students learn the key elements of land and water resources that are essential to improving management practices. Projects take place at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities; the Fond du Lac Reservation in Northern Minnesota; and Salish Kootenai College on the Flathead Reservation in Montana.

You must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident to apply for this program. The program is open to undergraduate students majoring in civil engineering, geosciences, ecology, mathematics, social sciences, or related fields.

Students receive a $7000 stipend and program-related costs (housing, food, and transportation) are covered. Students are also provided up to $1000 to share their research at a professional conference after the program is over.

Want to know more? We also encourage prospective applicants to explore our Winter Webinar Series, including the SLAWR REU Application: Tips & Tricks webinar. ▼   Paid International Research Experience & Training   Summer 2026 Application Deadline: January 15, 2026

ASLO is pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications from undergraduate students for the Limnology and Oceanography Research Exchange and Mentoring Experience (LOREX ME) Program! LOREX ME provides paid international research experiences and training for graduate and undergraduate students. Funded by the National Science Foundation (Award #2505282), LOREX ME supports ASLO’s mission to develop the next generation of aquatic scientists through professional development, training in international research collaborations, and mentorship.

The LOREX ME international exchanges will allow up to 8 undergraduate students to travel to host institutions in Australia, Canada, Israel and Sweden to conduct original, student-led collaborative aquatic science research. Undergraduate students will be paired with a graduate student mentor with aligning research interests and the student teams will travel together this summer (2026).

Eligibility: Due to NSF regulations, the research exchanges are currently only open to US citizens or permanent residents currently enrolled in an undergraduate program. (Note: If you have ideas on how to leverage funds from additional sources to support students from additional countries, or suggestions for this effort, please contact us via reply email.) ▼   University of California Santa Cruz Leadership Immersion Program Deadline: February 1, 2026

We are looking for your help finding emerging conservation leaders!

Applications for the University of California Santa Cruz Conservation Leadership Immersion Program (conservationleadership.ucsc.edu) are available today through February 1, 2026. We would like to enlist your help reaching prospective Scholars using the attached materials, social media posts, and our website. Our goal is to serve students from groups with ideas, perspectives and experiences traditionally underrepresented in conservation who can contribute to broadening, redefining, and strengthening efforts to protect land, wildlife, and water.

In March we will select 8 undergraduate Scholars from around the country to participate in a two-week conservation immersion program followed by an 8-week summer internship. Each Scholar receives a $10,800 stipend for living expenses and housing.

The beginning of the program (May 31 - June 13, 2026) starts with a two-week, immersive field course on conservation practice, leadership, and ecological research on UC Natural Reserves from the coast to the mountains in Central California. For the remainder of the summer (June 15 - August 8, 2026), Scholars pursue eight-week research and practice internships with nationally recognized research labs or conservation organizations. Professional development workshops during Fall 2026 prepare Scholars to apply for jobs and graduate school. In summer 2027, Scholars will attend a national research conference. Throughout the program, we work with each Scholar to provide ongoing mentoring support that continues past program completion as alumni, and they join a nationwide alumni network for peer support and professional networking.

We serve all students who can study in the United States without a visa (including citizens, nationals, residents, refugees, DACA, undocumented, and more) and who are currently juniors or seniors at a 4-year college or university. We highly encourage applicants from groups whose ideas, perspectives, and experiences are underrepresented in environmental conservation to apply. Visit our FAQ for more questions about eligibility and criteria.

I hope you will share our program information with faculty, advisors, juniors & seniors, and others in your professional and community networks. Applications are now available and will close at 11:59 pm on Sunday, February 1, 2026.
