Anthropology is the science of humanity and includes everything human! It covers people of all places, times and cultures. We work to understand what it means to be human, solve modern problems and shape our future for the better. Anthropology is an engaging discipline that broadens one’s worldview, promotes critical thinking skills applicable far beyond anthropology, and provides a holistic and humanistic perspective necessary to living and working in an increasingly global economy and community.
Many anthropology graduates are not hired under the title of “anthropologist.” Instead, anthropologists work in all sorts of industries, including academia, law, medicine, government, museums, tech companies, non-profits and social services. In our program, students learn how to apply their anthropological skillset to craft their own career path.
Here’s why Anthropology at the University of South Alabama is unique:
Our students have opportunities to:
- Present research at professional conferences
- Learn excavations methods at local archaeological sites
- Intern at the campus museum or other local institutions
- Join our active and student-run organizations
- Native American Student Association (NASA)
- Student Anthropological Society (SAS)
- Participate in forensic recoveries from real, local cases
- Conduct research on archaeological human skeletons on campus or abroad
- Gain ethnographic research skills
- Learn ways to advocate for marginalized local and global communities
- Develop digital humanities skills through local oral history and mapping projects
