Bio: I grew up in a small town in northeast Alabama, where I was raised on a cattle farm. After attending a local community college, I transferred to the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Between completing my undergraduate degree and attending medical school, I worked as a research specialist at a medical school. During medical school, I also earned a master’s in business administration.
What do you like about Mobile: Mobile offers a variety of activities and a wonderful array of restaurants. It also has many historic parts with beautiful scenery. Not to mention, being close to the beach is always a plus.
What do you like about the residency: This program offers an academic learning environment with a supportive, well-trained faculty and state-of-the-art facilities.
Hobbies: Traveling, scuba diving, basketball, fishing, game nights, spending time with friends and family, and watching football
Fun fact: My dog, Maggie, has a unique talent; she can rebound and steal a basketball. Another fun fact about me is that I have traveled to 15 countries and 30 states.

Bio: I actually transferred from OB/GYN before realizing my calling was in the ED. I initially couples matched here with my EM husband and spent a year admiring his program's atmosphere, support, lifestyle, and breadth of patients. I'm thrilled to bring my procedural skills and women's health knowledge to University Hospital!
What do you like about Mobile: The TREES! Mobile is so gorgeous and lush with huge live oaks and vibrant azaleas. The food is wonderful, and people are warm while offering an urban atmosphere where you can go out and let loose with friends.
What do you like about the residency: Everyone is genuinely welcoming and working to develop EM physicians rather than use residents for cheap labor. Also, my co-residents and attendings recognize and acknowledge the importance of a rich life outside of work, which makes for more well-rounded and less burnt-out coworkers.
Hobbies: Karaoke, painting (acrylic, posca), growing veggies, annoying my dogs with love,
altering/making clothes, hiking, consuming Indian/Thai/Viet/Korean food, concerts,
and pointing out birds with my husband

Nick Gregory, M.D.

Bio: Born and raised in northeast Florida. Majored in biomedical engineering with full intentions of pursuing a career in medicine. Worked as a CNA, MA, and cardiac stress tech prior to beginning medical school. Met the love of my life during medical school and got engaged shortly before arriving in Alabama together.
What do you like about Mobile: The food, Southern hospitality, outdoor activities, and the cost of living.
What do you like about the residency: New facilities, great faculty, and welcoming/family environment created by everyone within the residency program.
Hobbies: Sports, in particular football, basketball, baseball and all things Gators. I also enjoy scuba diving, traveling, and trying new things.
Fun fact: I grew up on my parents’ farm assisting with the care of animals of all kinds from your standard dogs, goats, pigs, chickens to the more exotic ostriches and corn snakes. Interesting fact: 1 ostrich egg = 24 chicken eggs.
Sydney Grubb, D.O.

Bio: I was born and raised in a small town outside of Minneapolis, Minnesota. I studied genetics and cell biology at the University of Minnesota, and I worked as a scribe and a barista. I went to ACOM for medical school. In my spare time I love playing with my puppy, reading, and going to the gym!
What do you like about Mobile: It's close enough to the beach and lots of large cities, so there is always plenty to do.
What do you like about the residency: All the faculty and residents are incredibly kind and supportive.
Hobbies: Reading, writing music, going to the gym, playing with my puppy.
Fun fact: I have been to 27 states and 12 countries.
Tony Jackson, D.O.
Hometown: Born in Auburn, California, but moved to northwest Florida at 14. I have lived all over the country though.

Bio: I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at 18 and served as an infantry rifleman. After leaving the Marines, I pursued a degree in finance during my undergraduate studies. Following some time in the business world, where I found myself unfulfilled, I transitioned to prehospital care, first as an EMT and later as a paramedic in a busy 911 county EMS service. Concurrently, during medical school, I also taught EMT and paramedic students at a local program. However, my most important and fulfilling role is being a father to an amazing daughter who continues to impress me daily.
What do you like about Mobile: Mobile is a wonderful city with great food and lots of amenities, however, the outdoor life is what I enjoy the most. The natural beauty is very diverse with an assortment of hiking trails, rivers, and beaches nearby. Both Pensacola and New Orleans are close enough for day trips as well.
What do you like about the residency: The program has a safety net feel in a small academic center environment. It is high acuity with abundant learning opportunities. The faculty and residents are incredibly welcoming and supportive!
Hobbies: Working out, paddle boarding, camping and hiking.
Fun fact: My first dream job was to be a Marine Corps Aviator, but I was medically disqualified.

What do you like about Mobile: This area will forever be “home” for me and being able to practice medicine here has always been a dream of mine.
What do you like about the residency: Level I trauma center, emphasis on education, patient diversity, and dedicated faculty.
Hobbies: Hunting, fishing, exercising, going to the beach, watching Auburn football and Atlanta Braves baseball.
Fun fact: Before starting college, I spent a week sailing around the British Virgin Islands with my best friends.
Tosin Oladunjoye, M.D.

Bio: I was born and raised in New York City, the Big Apple. As a metropolis, the city has exposed me to a variety of cultures and taught me how to communicate with people from all walks of life. I discovered my love and passion for emergency medicine while working in the inner-city hospital system. Before attending medical school, I worked as a teacher, mentor, and researcher. I aim to give back to underserved communities through my line of work. I met my fiancée Jessica in medical school, and we plan to build a life together here in the South.
What do you like about Mobile: There is a lot of history and great cuisine in Mobile. The downtown urban city lifestyle and suburban lifestyle are both available to you.
What do you like about the residency: You'll find that the faculty truly care about your growth and success. I really enjoy the training sessions involving simulations and hands-on exercises.
Hobbies: A sport of any kind.
Fun fact: I once told a joke to a famous NBA player, and he laughed.
Ore Oyetan, M.D.

Bio: I was accepted to Howard University Washington, D.C., on a full tuition scholarship. I graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in biology and minor in chemistry. While at Howard, I was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest honorary scholastic society in the U.S., which counts among its members a number of U.S. presidents, Supreme Court justices and senators. After matriculation into Howard University College of Medicine in 2017, I served as a senator on the Executive Board Student Council. Presently, I am pursuing a career in emergency medicine after previously being a general surgery resident.
What do you like about Mobile: I love celebrating Mardi Grad in Mobile. It's also relatively quiet with lower cost of living, having lived in big cities for years.
What do you like about the residency: USA EM residency is a family-friendly program with excellent resident camaraderie and supportive attendings.
Hobbies: Love trying new restaurants. Avid NBA fan and FIFA gamer.
Fun fact: I love spicy food and haven’t met anyone that matches my Scoville scale

Bio: I'm from Church Point, Louisiana, in the heart of Cajun Country. So most people will mispronounce my last name as Richard instead of Richard. It's confusing but I'd gladly explain if you ask. Before medical school I worked as an ED tech and was a lifeguarding instructor in college. No pets currently but searching for a pet fish.
What do you like about Mobile: Close parallels to life back home like seafood, Mardi Gras, the weather, and the beaches.
What do you like about the residency: An academic program at a Level 1 trauma center serving a large catchment area along the Gulf Coast with a high acuity, diverse patient population, supportive faculty, close-knit group of residents, and newly built adult and pediatric emergency departments … what's not to like?
Hobbies: Anything outside like running, hiking, soccer, attempts at gardening, carving pumpkins, and responding with “Tigers” when someone says “Geaux”
Fun fact: I once slept through French Customs on an overnight bus trip from London to Paris.

Bio: I am a lifelong resident of Alabama, having grown up on a farm where I developed a deep appreciation for rural life and the outdoors. I share my home with my German Shorthaired Pointer, Hurdy, who enjoys exploring the hiking trails of Mobile and the many accesses to water. I was recently engaged and look forward to the next chapter of life with my fiancé, Katie, balancing my love for the outdoors with my personal and professional pursuits in Alabama.
What do you like about Mobile: I enjoy the proximity to the beach, the Mardi Gras season, the distinctive culture, and all the restaurant options.
What do you like about the residency: I appreciate the connections between residents, the complexity of patient cases, and the support from the faculty.
Hobbies: Kayaking, golfing, pickleball, long walks on the beach with my No. 1 Hurdy.

Chasen Birdsong, D.O.

Bio: I grew up in Chattanooga, TN, and moved to Murfreesboro when I was around 20, following my family. I worked as a restaurant server and briefly in a dental lab during that time. Since childhood, I had a passion for Halloween and special effects makeup, which eventually led me to pursue it professionally. I packed up my Scion XB and drove to Los Angeles with little more than a dream of working in film. Over the next eight years, I built a successful career in film, TV, and commercials, working at several FX shops. For the last two years, I served as co-supervisor at Autonomous FX Inc. Through a series of unexpected events, I discovered a calling to medicine. I returned to Tennessee, completed my undergraduate studies at MTSU, and went on to attend medical school at LMU-DCOM in Knoxville. While in undergrad, I worked as a scribe in a local emergency department, where I realized emergency medicine was truly my passion.
What do you like about Mobile: I like the warmer climate and the fact that housing was cheap enough that I could buy a house.
What do you like about the residency: The people.
Hobbies: Pool (billiards, not swimming), creating, inventing, fixing, or fabricating things, the occasional video game, traveling, shooting, hanging out with friends, dirt bikes and 4-wheelers

Stephen Curry, M.D.

Bio: I grew up in the backwoods of north Texas. As the first doctor in my family, I am very interested in rural and wilderness medicine. I am a former collegiate athlete, so I believe physical fitness is an important component of patient well-being. I’m excited to be here at USA Health, where I expect to encounter a wide range of patient presentations as part of my resident training.
What do you like about Mobile: Here in Mobile, wide-open spaces meet the Gulf, which provides plenty of things to do outdoors!
What do you like about the residency: The vibe here is very chill. Everyone recognizes we are all human, and we hold ourselves to an appropriate standard.
Hobbies: Stand-up paddle boarding, running, lifting weights, hiking, music festivals
Fun fact: My family has a foster home for tortoises!
William Davis, M.D.

Bio: I grew up on a farm in rural Lowndes County, Alabama. I attended the University of Alabama for undergrad. I studied kinesiology and played football for four years, winning three SEC championships and one national championship. I obtained my medical degree at the Heersink School of Medicine.
What do you like about Mobile: I love the towering oak trees and Spanish moss. The bay, delay and gulf offer me dealers’ choice when it comes to fishing. I also enjoy experiencing the culture and food scene.
What do you like about the residency: I love my coresidents and the faculty. Dr. Plash and co are very invested in us as Emergency physicians and as people. I'm grateful for the opportunity to be in such an educational and supportive environment.
Hobbies: Hunting, fishing, my dogs Coosa and Ellie, Alabama football, and spending time with my family, especially my sisters and four nieces.

Grant Harris, D.O.

Bio: I grew up in a small town in south Louisiana and spent a lot of time outdoors hunting and fishing at a relatively young age and still enjoy them today. My interest in medicine began through exposure as a first responder with our local fire department; it offered me the opportunity to see that I loved emergency medicine before I ever really knew what it entailed.
What do you like about Mobile: It is very similar to Baton Rouge and New Orleans, but it also adds the benefits of a port city.
What do you like about the residency: It is based in a very busy trauma center offering many learning opportunities each shift. Longitudinal pediatrics and ultrasound curricula are huge bonuses.
Hobbies: Night vision astronomy, long-range competitive shooting
Fun fact: When I was 13 or so, I was hit by a cop car (rolled up on the windshield) while I was walking to a Halloween party dressed in a Burger King costume; I managed to not drop the tray of cookies I was carrying.
Mary Anne Mendes, M.D.

Bio: Born and raised Jersey girl, self-taught then licensed cosmetologist, first-gen physician. Prior to medical school, I had many jobs relating to service which started as a fashion design major in NYC where I transitioned into makeup and hair for TV, magazines, film, events and private clients out of my home. I continued to cut hair and do makeup for extra cash in med school. Other jobs included aid to quadriplegic, personal trainer, wellness coach and retail. During intern year of family medicine, I found my calling to EM and am excited for the next chapter of my journey!
What do you like about Mobile: Tropical weather and moving out of the Northeast. The polite and welcoming people of the south. Being in a large city surrounded by charming neighborhoods decorated with canopies of oak trees and Spanish moss with hints of random tropical palm trees. Being on the gulf and the proximity to the white sandy beaches.
What do you like about the residency: An EM colleague told me about USA and decided to apply. I knew nothing about Alabama, much less living in Mobile until I visited for my second look when I instantly knew it was a perfect fit. An academic level 1 trauma center with large catchment of diverse and sick population, a supportive and receptive faculty, diverse and supportive residents, the importance of wellness and emphasis on work-life balance.
Hobbies: Lifting weights (in the DNA from my Dad who was an Olympic weight-lifter), Brazilian jiu-jitsu, yoga, pen-collecting, drawing, journaling, exploring new areas/countries, speak-easies, anything active or outdoors
Fun fact: I'm deathly afraid of heights but jumped out of a perfectly good airplane and would consider it again.
Mark Slusher, M.D.

Bio: I grew up in Beaufort, South Carolina, and finished my last two years of high school on an American base in Stuttgart, Germany. I returned to South Carolina for my Bachelor of Science in Biology and, later, medical school. Between college and med school, I was employed as a medical scribe for family medicine practices.
What do you like about Mobile: Southern hospitality, coastal vibes, and beautiful downtown area.
What do you like about the residency: I prefer the supportive atmosphere with dedicated faculty. We also have a level 1 trauma center, wide catchment area, and diverse patient population, allowing for ample training opportunity.

Bio: I grew up in Southern California and moved to the South for high school and beyond. I’m drawn to global, sports, and wilderness medicine, with a strong focus on caring for underserved communities. Before medical school, I spent several years in clinical research, which sparked my path into medicine.
What do you like about Mobile: Mobile blends Gulf Coast charm with real community. I love the easy access to the water, the food scene, and the city’s deep cultural history (hello, Mardi Gras!). It’s friendly, diverse, and perfectly set up for outdoor time between shifts.
What do you like about the residency: Hands-on training, strong ultrasound and resuscitation experience, and a supportive faculty who invest in mentorship. The patient mix is broad, the volume is high, and there are meaningful opportunities in community engagement, global health, and wilderness electives — all of which align with my career goals.
Hobbies: Rollerblading and beach days, travel, making art, live music
Fun fact: I’m Safe Sport certified and have shadowed ringside physicians, my artwork has been selected for exhibition, and I’ve performed the national anthem for Pensacola's Blue Wahoos.
Erin Ward, M.D.

Bio: I grew up in Birmingham, Alabama, and earned an undergraduate degree from UAB. After that, I decided to take an alternate route and sell wine, which brought me down south to Mobile. I again switched gears and went to USA for my pre-reqs for medical school and was accepted to UAB School of Medicine. After graduation, I did PGY1-2 years in surgery and decided to switch to emergency medicine for sanity purposes. I always loved mobile and felt like this would be the perfect fit for me.
What do you like about Mobile: The humidity
What do you like about the residency: The culture is fantastic, and I love my fellow residents. They feed us well! There is a lot of freedom out of the gate and a wide range of pathology. The program admins truly want to feedback about the residency and every year there are changes made based on that feedback. This is just to list a few.
Hobbies: Hanging out with my dog, Roman aka Mr. Man. Watching horror movies, reading, biking, running, hiking, hanging out with friends.
Fun fact: I do aerial silks – think Cirque du Soleil.

Kelly Blacksher, M.D.

Bio: Born and raised in Mobile, AL, I always knew I wanted to continue live and learn on the Gulf Coast. I attended Auburn University for undergrad where I got my B.S. in Biomedical Sciences Pre-Medicine with a minor in counseling. I've wanted to be a physician for as long as I can remember, so getting to continue my medical education in my hometown was so special. I fell in love with EM during my fourth year of medical school due to the breadth of patients and procedures every shift brings.
What do you like about Mobile: Family, friends, food, and of course... Mardi Gras! I love being near the water and being close to so many other fantastic cities like Fairhope, New Orleans, Biloxi, and Pensacola.
What do you like about the residency: Our program is led by faculty who truly love teaching and making medicine more accessible. Everyone really adopts a growth mindset that fosters learning, collaboration, and candor. I know my co-residents will always be there to support and encourage me!
Hobbies: Finding new restaurants, cocktails, and places to antique shop. I also love spending any time with my family and friends... especially my niece, Wesley (she is my favorite)!
Fun fact: I have a twin sister who will be joining the USA family as a nurse this year! I have worked two of Mobile's most quintessential food spots - Pollman's Bakery & Foosackly's
Duncan Henson, D.O.

Bio: I am from a small town in the Mississippi Delta. I went to undergrad at MSU, then took a gap year and worked as an ER Tech at an Academic Level 1 Trauma Center, where I fell in love with Emergency Medicine. I moved to Auburn, AL for medical school, and met my wife during our first year. We recently got married and couples matched at USA-she is an OBGYN resident.
What do you like about Mobile: I like being located on the gulf coast to enjoy the beaches, boating, seafood, golf, sunshine, and so much more.
What do you like about the residency: I did an away rotation here as a fourth year and immediately felt at home. Everyone was very nice, supportive, and excited to learn and work.

Bio: My name is Taher, I go by my last name Mando. I’m a Florida man born and raised. I love fishing and long walks on the beach. In my free time I lift weights at the gym and I like to eat a ton of different foods from different places in the world. I did most of my schooling in Pensacola and I went to ACOM in Dothan for medical school.
What do you like about Mobile: I love the sights and sounds of downtown.
What do you like about the residency: The people here are so nice and welcoming. There is always an outstretched hand to help whenever I need it.
Hobbies: Fishing, weightlifting, eating, sleeping, video games.
Fun fact: I can flat bench press 275 pounds and I’m working towards 315!

What do you like about Mobile: Mobile is an old city with a lot of different pockets of culture. There's always somewhere new to explore or something exciting going on.
What do you like about the residency: The faculty make it a great environment to learn in and there's significant patient diversity.

Bio: Born and raised in South Jersey - just outside Philly. Originally, I was a criminal justice major, but my own experience as a patient led me to find my love for medicine. Since I was late to the game deciding pre-med, I worked in neuroscience research prior to attending medical school.
What do you like about Mobile: I love the proximity to everything here. No matter what you want to do it's usually within a 15-minute drive. There are always events going on downtown and it has a very quaint atmosphere with beautiful oak trees and historic architecture.
What do you like about the residency: Very supportive faculty and co-residents. High patient volume, high acuity, hands-on experience, and a wide variety of pathologies.
Hobbies: Reality TV, Murder Mystery Books, Fishing, Exercising

Bio: I'm from south Louisiana, where I learned to appreciate good food, good people, and a little controlled chaos. Yes, I get the UFC jokes all the time. No, I don't have a title belt. I spent several years working as an ED tech, which made emergency medicine feel like home long before residency. Geaux Tigahs!
What do you like about Mobile: I love Mobile's laid-back coastal feel, good food, and the fact that I'm never far from the water. It reminds me of New Orleans with its rich history, historic streets lined with sprawling live oaks, and unmistakable charm, but with a smaller, more relaxed feel. It feels like home while still being somewhere new to explore. And of course, we still get our fair share of unique trauma alerts to keep things interesting.
What do you like about the residency: One of my favorite parts of residency is the people I get to learn from every day. The hospital provides incredible opportunities to learn from a wide variety of specialists, each bringing their own expertise and perspective to patient care. Just as importantly, my co-residents come from diverse backgrounds and experiences, making every shift an opportunity to learn something new from the people around me. Whether we are discussing a challenging case or sharing stories between patients, there never seems to be a shortage of laughter in the doc box.
Hobbies: Wakesurfing, Deep-sea fishing, Pickleball, Any craft I hyperfixate on for a week or two, Coolin with my cat Smokey
Fun fact: My childhood career goal was to become Steve Irwin. Thanks to the millions of hours of Animal Planet under my belt and the soothing narration of David Attenborough, I’m pretty sure I have a completely unofficial, highly questionable, and self-proclaimed education in the animal kingdom and its inner workings.

Bio: I grew up in a small city about 1.5hrs south of Atlanta. I went UGA in Athens, GA for undergrad and LMU in Knoxville, TN for medical school. I knew I wanted to stay in the Southeast for residency since my family and fiancé live in the area, and I really enjoy the culture and weather down here. In my free time, I enjoy cooking and trying new restaurants. I've always been a foodie but picked up my passion for cooking in med school. I especially like hosting or making meals for my family and friends. Some of my favorite dishes I've made so far are chicken bulgogi with Korean street corn, a classic Indian butter chicken, and Mediterranean falafel bowls!
What do you like about Mobile: I like the multiple cuisine options! I also really enjoyed celebrating Mardi Gras and seeing how lively the town becomes during that time of year. I'm also a fan of how close we are to the Florida beaches.
What do you like about the residency: So far, I have felt nothing but welcomed by the faculty and staff! Everyone has been so kind and warm and I am looking forward to creating closer relationships with my colleagues.
Hobbies: Trying new foods, cooking, traveling, taking walks, spending time with family and friends
Fun fact: I studied abroad at Oxford University for a semester in college and it was to this day one of the best times of my entire life!

Bio: I was born and raised in a small town west of Mobile. After undergrad, I spent two years as an Immunotherapy Research Assistant at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX and traveling the western US with my husband before I found a passion for medicine. I am a first-generation physician. Prior to starting emergency medicine training, I completed a year of family medicine residency training.
What do you like about Mobile: Mobile is beautiful. There are so many great restaurants and things to do.
What do you like about the residency: This program is incredibly supportive of resident education and truly creates an environment that encourages growth.
Hobbies: Hiking, road tripping, and sewing!
Fun fact: I got married in the Beartooth Mountains of Montanan on a 2-mile hike in hiking boots and a wedding dress!
