Research Internship Positions
Position Title: Summer Undergraduate Research Intern – Astronautics
Unit: BRAHMAND Laboratory
Appointment Period: Tentatively May 15, 2026, through August 15, 2026
Compensation: Total stipend of $2,500 for the internship period
Mentor: Dr. Kshitij Mall
The Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering at the University of South Alabama invites applications for a Summer Undergraduate Research Intern position in astronautics within the BRAHMAND Laboratory.
Essential duties
- Help develop a mock mission control center within the BRAHMAND Laboratory.
- Develop MATLAB and/or Python code to solve an optimal control problem in the propulsive entry, descent, and landing domain.
- Contribute to the preparation of two technical conference papers for AIAA SciTech 2027 and one manuscript for submission to a prominent peer-reviewed journal.
Minimum qualifications
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, without rounding.
- Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university in the United States in an engineering program with a specialization in Aerospace Engineering.
- Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
- Familiarity with computer programming and basic calculus.
- Experience with MATLAB and/or Python programming.

- Strong motivation, curiosity, and initiative.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Positive attitude, strong teamwork skills, and professional interpersonal conduct.
- Familiarity with GPOPS-II.
