VITA Program
Accounting Students in the Mitchell College of Business will be preparing 2023 Federal and State Income Tax Returns (at no cost) beginning January 29, 2024. This is a free service performed by upper division accounting students fulfilling their internship requirement towards their bachelor’s degree. Service is provided by appointment only. Please note your affiliation with the University of South Alabama at the time of scheduling (e.g., Faculty, Staff, Student, No affiliation, etc.).
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) will be open January 29 through April 13, 2024.
Mondays from 2:15 PM to 5:15 PM
Wednesdays from 2:15 PM to 5:15 PM
Saturdays from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM
Mitchell College of Business, Room 148
This service is available to anyone whose income is $73,00,000 or less for the 2023 tax year. Tax Forms will be completed in the Mitchell College of Business in Room 147 (first floor computer lab). Please bring the following with you:

All w-2s, 1099s, or other proof of income.

Proof of any deductions to be claimed.

Proof of tuition payment for students, a copy of all 2023 Tax Forms.

A valid driver's license or government issued ID.

Social security card of the taxpayer and spouse and any other dependents you plan to claim on your 2023 tax return

A completed IRS form Intake Form, which may be found here.
We will not be able to complete your return if you do not have the previously mentioned documents.
Tax Prep Program More Than Doubles Participation
Upper division accounting students in the Mitchell College of Business prepared 176 income tax returns for the public, students and staff this spring, a 126% increase over last year.
The students worked through the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Program. It offers free basic tax return preparation for people with annual income under $73,000.
Accounting students have been repairing returns through VITA for five years at the Mitchell College, saving taxpayers approximately $62,000 in professional tax preparation fees. Since 2019, students have prepared over 450 returns.
MCOB students working in the VITA program fulfill internship requirements toward their bachelor's degrees.
