What is FERPA & what information does it protect?
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 is designed to protect
the privacy of a student's educational records. These confidential records include
academic, financial aid, scholarship, and billing/account information, and will not
be released without written consent from the student.
What if I want my parent/guardian to have access to my student financial information?
In order for the Division of Student Financial Services (SFS) to release student financial information, a student must complete the Authorization to Release Financial Information form to indicate the specific person/business/organization that they would like to grant access to.
When the specified person/business/organization reaches out to SFS they must:
- be listed on the FERPA Form,
- provide the student’s full name and Jag Number, and
- provide the FERPA password.
The Division of Student Financial Services includes the Office of Student Accounting, Office of Financial Aid, Office of Scholarship Services, and the USA One Stop.
What specific student financial information will be shared with a FERPA password?
Submitting the FERPA Release form authorizes the USA Division of Student Financial Services to release the educational records as outlined below to the person/business/organization as identified by the student.
- Financial aid and scholarship records, including processing and eligibility status as well as award types and amounts. This information will not include specific parental income or asset information.
- Student account activity and statements, including charges and payments posted to that account and any refund amounts processed.
- Housing and meal plan details, which may include amounts owed as well as amounts paid.
This authorization form does not allow the University to release any other specific
educational records.
