History

Founding of the CSHI

For over 20 years, the Center for Strategic Health Innovation (CSHI), has been housed as a free-standing healthcare innovations group in the USA College of Medicine. From its inception, the group has held technology as its primary focus, especially information systems, in healthcare improvement. As the recipient of multiple Federal grants and state contracts over the past years, USA/CSHI has demonstrated a high degree of cooperation and collaboration with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)Health & Human Services (HHS) as a whole, and other Federal agencies.

History of Recognition for Excellence

CSHI first received national recognition in 2005 for being Regional Innovator of the Year Award from the Southern Growth Policies Board, as well as receiving the 2005 Innovations Award from the Council of State Governments Southern Legislative Conference for rural healthcare innovation in the Biomonitoring program, managing chronic health conditions with the state of Alabama’s Medicaid program. CSHI is the second-largest remote patient monitoring program in the country. The Center provides robust back-end support to Alabama Medicaid as a part of its Remote Patient Monitoring program and works closely in a unique partnership with the Alabama Medicaid Agency and the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) to provide an innovative Interactive Voice Response Biomonitoring system for Medicaid patients with chronic diseases such as Diabetes, Hypertension, and Congestive Heart Failure.

Another of CSHI’s cornerstone systems is RMEDE™, the Real Time Medical Electronic Data Exchange, an industry-leading program that features predictive analytics capability, customizable ad hoc reporting, and is a world-class data warehouse architecture and business intelligence platform. RMEDE™ provides health information technology and research to improve quality and decrease costs of medical care provided to patients, providers and payers. RMEDE™ is used by the ADPH Nurses in managing and improving care for these chronically ill patients. Through a partnership with the Alabama Medicaid Agency, CSHI provides ongoing research and analytical expertise with systems development, population modeling, analytics and reporting to manipulate, analyze and report Medicaid data. CSHI developed a case management system within RMEDE™ to support Health Homes. With Health Homes, we align quality measures with other National Systems such as the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS). RMEDE™’s case management system encompasses multiple functionality including; tracking, risk stratification and predictive modeling.
